Internet firmware update for Moviesheets in wdlxtv-live

Hello everyone. I’d just like to announce that after weeks of successful testing with the help of my beta testing crew, movie sheets are ready to go for WDLXTV-Live!!! I have activated the auto-update feature, that is one of my many unnanounced/hidden/forgotten about features, and pulled the moviesheet update directly into your firmware. :D

Yes, this means that you now have moviesheet capability built in to your WDTV Live. You have access to the same three views from my previous video: full screen ‘std’ mode, ‘sheet’ mode, and ‘wall’ mode.

No really, I did update your firmware live–without any intervention from you and you now have moviesheet capability. Don’t believe me? ;)

config_tool -c MSHEETMODE=sheet
config_tool -c VIDMSHEET=ON
config_tool -c GENMSHEET=ON
config_tool -c LISTMSHEET=ON

How is this possible?

Sorry for the bad joke, it just aligned so perfectly. :D Big thanks again to those who helped me test them.

If you’d like to recreate my original movie sheet tour here is the archive.

You *MUST* have the ‘Show filesize setting in options OFF’ in order to see sheets for individual movies.

good one, if my kids didn’t already wear me out on the april fools i probably would have fallen for it. can’t wait for the actual release. cheers b-rad. as soon as i get this on job done and paid i will be floating some beer money your way.

<<< edit: no, see thats the thing here–it’s not a joke. The aprils fools part was only the automagic upgrade part, the moviesheet code has been there for a few versions. Only my testers have known about it, because I have changed its implementation and config and I didn’t want to publish anything until I had it concrete. The video I shot was filmed using a stock wdlxtv-live install, I am going to annotate the video tommorrow so you can do the same thing. If you don’t believe me, and have moviesheets in your collection, then telnet/ssh in and execute the commands I have in the article. ;) –b-rad >>>

You did…which is awesome!!!
However, I cannot seem to get write permissions to the OSD folder in this version. (EXT version of course)
Is there a way I can fix that? I need to tweak one of the xml files.

<<< edit: You can look around in the scripts and see wheres what now. the init.d script says it all. –b-rad >>>

Can’t get it to work. Hope there will be a tutorial soon. Can only change background or thumbsize with editing s00custom in wordpad.

GREAT!! thank you for this nice easter egg.. (;

Works great with USB Drive connected to the WD…but still working hard get it running when using a network drive. I’ll let you know if i got it (;

April 2nd, 2010 06:56

Having trouble getting the network drive working myself :-( I was really looking forward to this feature….

<<< edit: a forum is an infinitely better place to debug than the comments. –b-rad >>>

April 2nd, 2010 07:15

HI B-Rad, Thank you soo much for your continued hard work on this project.

You Rock.

One thing though, that i;m still confused about.

Does your newest release of firmware support moviesheets only for local drives?

I.e. I’m network sharing all my stuff from my main PC. and i can;t seem to get movie sheets working for love-nor-money.

April 2nd, 2010 08:11

a hah. got it, the ads made me miss it. i have a gen2 but no wifi usb for the time being, the one i have is not supported. if there was a way to directly connect my wdtv i’d be golden. or maybe i will just go out and get a wifi usb when i have the cash, any suggestions on which one works best.

<<< edit: moviesheets are actually not in wdlxtv-g2 yet, soon. i got a generic N adapter with detachable antenna off ebay for $15 shipped, search ebay for rt3070. You can also execute the commands via S00custom-options. –b-rad >>>

April 2nd, 2010 08:23

gotcha, i appreciate all the hard work you’ve done with everything. so currently these options aren’t in the wdlxtv-g2…but maybe soon… i have gotten titis msheets to work off my thumbdrive, but not my hdd. I have waited patiently and will continue to, i don’t like doing anything half-assed.

again thank you!

April 2nd, 2010 08:26

What options does MSHEETOPTS have?

<<< edit: it doesnt exist anymore. –b-rad >>>

April 2nd, 2010 08:39

Have got it working, sort of.
Seems I have create a directory and move the movie in to it with the _sheet file. But that just adds another step to watch the movie ? Will there be an update so the movies can stay in their genre folder ?

Thanks again, Mark

April 2nd, 2010 09:42

First, thx for this alternate firmware!!! I was really looking forward for the movie sheet, but like many other, my movies are stored on a NAS and it doesnt seem to work for network drive (yet). Any plan to support them (for moviesheet) in the near future?

<<< edit: workin for me right now as I write this, everything of mine is stored on NFS. –b-rad >>>

April 2nd, 2010 10:52

I am quite a newbie, and have searched for the movie sheet feature for quite a while. Please help me on how to make it work. I have searched the forum.

I have installed the latest WDLXTV live firmware. I have looked into the s00 config file, but I can´t anything about moviesheets. What shall I do? Please help. I will happily donate, if I could get the movie sheets to work…

<<< edit: Ask on the wdlxtv forums. –b-rad >>>

April 2nd, 2010 10:57

How does this all work??

<<< edit: Do you really expect to understand the technical answer I’d give? Go ask on the wdlxtv forums. –b-rad >>>

April 2nd, 2010 10:58

so what do you think the odds of some store letting me exchange my gen2 for a live are? lol

April 2nd, 2010 13:29

I’ve been looking for a more detailed explanation to get this working all morning. I’ve followed everything to the letter and still cant get it to work.

April 2nd, 2010 15:20

Just solved my problem. I recently switch to WDLXTV and I downloaded the firmware from the “WDLXTV-Live – The extreme upgrade” article (which is about

I just found out that the latest release is WDLXTV_LIVE- Now its working :)

<<< edit: updated main wdlxtv-live page now that is as stable as it is :) –b-rad >>>

April 2nd, 2010 18:18

Re installed newest firmware, now everything works. Fantastic

April 3rd, 2010 11:41

I have now installed the correct version of wdlxtv-live and added the lines below in soo config…

config_tool -c SHOW_FILESIZE_SETTING=0
config_tool -c MSHEETMODE=sheet
config_tool -c VIDMSHEET=ON
config_tool -c GENMSHEET=ON
config_tool -c LISTMSHEET=ON

The WDTV Live now changed the layout as it is supposed to but it now says that the media library cannot be created, when it scans my USB Hdd. What have I done wrong? All my movies are in separate folders. Please help. I also want movie sheets.

<<< edit: Ask on the wdlxtv forums. –b-rad >>>

April 4th, 2010 13:47

Hallo, can somebody send the S00custom-options file with the sheets are work.

<<< edit: Visit the wdlxtv forums and find what you need there. –b-rad >>>

April 4th, 2010 23:41

Hi there

Firstly, thanks for all the AMAZING work you’ve been doing on the Live. You work (and others with OSDs etc) is the reason I went for the Live over any other players!!!

Now my question, the code you mentioned to telnet/SSH in to execute, am i right to think that I could add those lines to the S00custom-options file and execute them that way, as I don’t currently have my Live networked.

<<< edit: affirmative ;) –b-rad >>>

April 5th, 2010 06:01

Wow, nice!
Wich template generator did you use?

<<< edit: The one I’ve linked to on the page, Thumbgen. –b-rad >>>

April 6th, 2010 09:09

Is your actual version WDLXTV_LIVE- compatible to the latest WD FW 1.02.21? I don’t want to mix up different versions, if not necessary ;-) . My WD TV Live “Auto-Updated” itself some days ago – now I’m not sure, if I should apply your FW to that brandnew WD FW.

<<< edit: doesn’t matter ;) –b-rad >>>

April 6th, 2010 11:02

Man, you are awesome!!! Thank you very much for this fantastic feature! :)
Though at the moment it doesn’t work for me yet (I wrote this 4 lines to telnet, the device accepted it but nothing happened) it is absolutely a great improvement. Thanx again and keep going! :)

April 10th, 2010 12:55

hey, any chance of implement the lastest changes from subs, from the official firmware? like repositioning? :~
as u can see my english sucks, i’m from brazil and the official firmware allows me to move the subs, buttt…i love movie sheets :( hehehehe

<<< edit: Take a peek at the new homebrew forums, you might find something there to hold you over ;) –b-rad >>>

April 12th, 2010 21:59

I was installing the last version on a wd live and I was unable to change the root password. What I’ve done wrong?

April 13th, 2010 06:45

WDLXTV-Live + ThumbGen + TheTvDB TVSheetGenerator = a WD box as it should be :)

Future request: play the mp3 tune on selection of a serie / movie :)

April 13th, 2010 11:15

Will this work with WDTV MP ver.2

April 16th, 2010 03:50

Congratulations on the good work. The versions are getting better. But I have a doubt.
How can I do to see the Menu in movies DVD ISO? They are also VOB files?

<<< edit: Are dvd menu’s listed as a current feature in any documentation? Your question has been answered probably a sextillion times. –b-rad >>>

April 18th, 2010 07:40

it’s working intermittent. not all folders are showing sheets. :( when i restart the device, previously working aren’t working. :(

<<< edit: Debug on the wdlxtv forums. –b-rad >>>

April 19th, 2010 04:28

for wdtvg2 do we have to wait for a official firmware that will allow us to exploit a similiar action? or is something in the works?

<<< edit: Ask on the wdlxtv forums, you’ll find something there. –b-rad >>>

Loving the look, but honestly the whole thing is kind of a pain to setup and keep up for every movie I add, anyway something can be implemented like xbmc/ boxee to load the covers and movie sheets (they could be saved on the media drive in a hidden folder)? I have a CS degree, but i don’t know the limitations of the device. sheets work no matter which folder theyre in, this is sweet, now why cant covers be the same? and all you would need to do is have a script implemented to download the shets automatically for any new file. let me know, maybe i can be of some help, awesome work.

<<< edit: Sign up at, then read up what little there is on wdtvext, then polish up your javascript and get coding :D –b-rad >>>

April 29th, 2010 16:15

This is great.

There seems to be a limitation to the *sheet.jpg file. Anything over 500k are not being displayed.

May 6th, 2010 23:37

Very very nice, works absolutely perfect

May 14th, 2010 08:32

Fantastic work – thank you b-rad!

Makes WDTV-Live the best media player on the market

(once I had finally worked out how to get it to work – it’s 20 years since I did any Unix/Linux)

I have updated the extreme firmware but can not access the dvd rom…

<<< edit: Refer to for support. External optical drive support is a bit lacking since my drive broke. –b-rad >>>

October 21st, 2010 15:39 updated my firmware to the wdvtlive-plus but i can’t get my sheets to show. The shows when I connect my old medis centre. wdtvLive but not the plus. All I see is the thumbnails
