Something arrived for me today, a shiny new WDTV Live Plus. In the following article I’ll describe my thoughts on it and tear in a bit to see whats going on. I’ll be looking for differences in base operation and hardware, comparing it to a WDTV Live (1?) along the way.

I’m not going to repeat pictures that haven’t changed a bit compared to the original WDTV Live. The outer box is the only new thing here, the inner contents contain and look the exact same as the original. Here’s the outer box.

I’ve hightlighted the few interesting bits I think might be of interest. The only real difference between original WDTV Live and the WDTV Live Plus is the CPU, the Plus comes with a sigma8654. The sigma8654 is required because of the Netflix functionality, it is the ‘copy protection’ enabled variant of the sigma8655 that is in the original. Do you notice anything special at the end of the boot log? No shell prompt! The serial console comes locked down. No casual plug and go inspection, no instant hacking & playing…Requires a bit of tinkering and some work. Luckily I know my way around sigma boards and will be able to let myself in the back door soon enough. Right now though I’m gonna have to watch some Netflix, since I’m down in Washington visiting some friends…

I’ll be updating this post sometime soon with a fw dump and more detailed system analysis–from the inside. Maybe even a fw to install too, we’ll see

wasn’t aware of that new generation thing… thought that next step would be some “major” development on the sigma chip…
Just one question, do you think, development will now directly focus on this Gen 2 WDTVLive or will it still be in the focus to enable opt-packages on the old one?

B-rad — I have just recently gotten into digitizing my monstrousity of a DVD collection, and upon some research stumbled across the WDTV Live (and +) in addition to your homebrew firmwares for them. I am *very* excited to order mine and start playing around with them I was curious if you have gotten enough information about the new system and meshed it with your personal schedule to give us a approximate timeframe on when you may be releasing the new Plus firmware?

Also, is this something you do full time or is it more of just a side project for you? In either case, be expecting a donation from me to help keep you going just as soon as my Plus arrives in the mail

I’ve owned both the Live and the +. I’ve noticed a definite difference in the boot up time between these two boxes. Is there that much difference between the cpu’s, or is this just a firmware problem?

Just got a WDTV Live Plus the other day…The kids dig the netflix, i like the youtube and networking, it’s nice. my wdtv hd will move to the bedroom. Look forward to what you come up with on this b-rad.

I wish wd would have it so you could view your thumbnails in the way the netflix thumbs are, i have been asking them for something like that since the original wdtv.

They do have a thumbnail feature, the options button on the remote will give you the option to pick thumbnail view, you can then use a program called thumbgen to browse sites and get cover art, poster art, etc. and it will scan your drive (based on folder name if you want) and put those files in with your movie file and they will show up right on the WDTV

Wonder what FW version in in the Plus. A quick text search for netflix in Live Non-Plus beta FW 1.03.22 wdtvlive.bin give lots of hits, so the FW image is most likely the same for both boxes, but netflix only enabled if Plus box detected.

B-Rad, can you provide the shuffle feature on WD TV LIVE PRO ? I have video files saved onto the root of the USB drive connected to the WDTVLive and all I need is for the files to be played automatically on power up, but in a shuffle mode.
Please Help !

The DVD player manula says connect to Computer USB ONLY, not to docking station or other USB hubs, i assum because it get’s the power form Comupter’s USP port, but by looking at some forums found that it is possible to connect DVD player directly to this MEdia player’s USB post. Could you please conferm if that is correct ot not, or might be possible with your custom firmware. Thank you in advence,

im sitting on this player as is, but am waiting to have a firmware upgrade from you soon, just got a new asus a4d0ad021509 external slim bd disc combo and cant wait to get it working.

I got the live plus a few weeks ago, would love to have torrent support on it! Looking forward to B-Rad firmware for the live plus keep up the amazing work man, I have never used your firmware because I only have the live plus but it looks great! Please work on getting this excellent firmware to work on the live plus, its the only entertainment I have while on house arrest will definitely donate a good amount when i finally get work release. thanks again b-rad, please look out for us with the live plus!!

If the internals for the WDTV and WDTV+ are the same — except the CPU — do you think a CPU upgrade would be possible to bring netflix to the older device post-CPU update?

neat thing, but what is it with the network share access ? does it use samba? which parameter is it set to – how does it access shares?
my linux dvb-receiver accesses my windows shares without problems, but wdtv-live has some difficulties.
i find docs everywhere which weird settings to set in windows, but it would be more helpful to know more about the wdtv settings. at the moment it only sometimes sees the network shares …

Thanks for all your work.
I just bought a Live, as that’s what they sold at costco. I didn’t realize there is a Live+. Sucks to be instantly obsolete.
Anyways, in your opinion (and others) is it worth it for me to return the item and pay an extra $30 (or so) to get the Live+. It would seem there would be advantages to being DRM free but the hacking community usually seems to free things up.

Hi, where do you find the time? I have been looking for a media player to buy. I like the WDTVLive+. FYI, CompUSA still has the WDTV and the WDTVLive. I could not find the WDTVLive+ on their shelves.
Do you release just the binaries or the source too? Is there a development team or just you?
What do you rhink of the Viewsonic VMP71 with the internal HD. The guts look just like the Argosy hv335t which supports bittorrents.

I recently bought one of the WD TV Live Media boxes and Live in Australia.
The problem was and still is, that the firmware dosn’t cover australian websites for tv amd ovies.
Is this something that you can do or is it something that is on the cards with WD oer is there a work around that I am not aware of..??

I would like to load this software on my WD plus, but I am confused as to if the project is still being worked on and I am having a hard time downloading the firmware, please send me a quick email how to get it. I want to load it on and check it out.
