WDTV Live Plus undressing

Something arrived for me today, a shiny new WDTV Live Plus. :-) In the following article I’ll describe my thoughts on it and tear in a bit to see whats going on. I’ll be looking for differences in base operation and hardware, comparing it to a WDTV Live (1?) along the way.

I’m not going to repeat pictures that haven’t changed a bit compared to the original WDTV Live. The outer box is the only new thing here, the inner contents contain and look the exact same as the original. Here’s the outer box.

WDTV Live Plus unopened box

Ok, thats out of the way…Now I’ll tear in a bit. First things first, A gigantic picture of the main board in all its nakedness.

WDTV Live Plus main board

Heres an even better pic with all stickers removed:

WDTV Live Plus unstickered main board

Next up is the initial bootlog of the system. This is obtained by connecting a 3.3V ttl serial->usb cable to the socket on the board. Board with serial cable connected ooks like this:

link to boot log

I’ve hightlighted the few interesting bits I think might be of interest. The only real difference between original WDTV Live and the WDTV Live Plus is the CPU, the Plus comes with a sigma8654. The sigma8654 is required because of the Netflix functionality, it is the ‘copy protection’ enabled variant of the sigma8655 that is in the original. Do you notice anything special at the end of the boot log? No shell prompt! The serial console comes locked down. No casual plug and go inspection, no instant hacking & playing…Requires a bit of tinkering and some work. Luckily I know my way around sigma boards and will be able to let myself in the back door soon enough. ;-) Right now though I’m gonna have to watch some Netflix, since I’m down in Washington visiting some friends…

I’ll be updating this post sometime soon with a fw dump and more detailed system analysis–from the inside. Maybe even a fw to install too, we’ll see ;-)

Be sure to check back.

Looking for a place to discuss? here is a good place.

Great to see you back in action.
So DRM and copyright protections are the next stage in WDTVs. :(

<<< edit: If you want to be able to watch Netflix, then yes. Similar to cable tv and satellite, content producers demand their content locked down. –b-rad >>>

Hi!

wasn’t aware of that new generation thing… thought that next step would be some “major” development on the sigma chip…
Just one question, do you think, development will now directly focus on this Gen 2 WDTVLive or will it still be in the focus to enable opt-packages on the old one?

best regards
michael

<<< edit: wdlxtv-live and wdlxtv-live+ will be identical feature wise, just the plus version will contain Netflix. –b-rad >>>

June 17th, 2010 08:26

What about the DVD Navigation feature?

It’s only available on the wdlxtv-live+ for now, right?

Kind regards,

Márcio

<<< edit: Yes, I don’t like the stability & number of bugs contained in WDTV Live beta firmware 1.03.22…so I won’t be basing a wdlxtv-live off it–it will come with time. –b-rad >>>

B-rad — I have just recently gotten into digitizing my monstrousity of a DVD collection, and upon some research stumbled across the WDTV Live (and +) in addition to your homebrew firmwares for them. I am *very* excited to order mine and start playing around with them :) I was curious if you have gotten enough information about the new system and meshed it with your personal schedule to give us a approximate timeframe on when you may be releasing the new Plus firmware?

Also, is this something you do full time or is it more of just a side project for you? In either case, be expecting a donation from me to help keep you going just as soon as my Plus arrives in the mail :)

Thanks for what you do, Jim.

<<< edit: Welcome to the scene, sign up at wdlxtv.com and join the forums for the latest info. This is a hobby, firmware development & enhancement is completely dependent on donations. Although I can be contracted out here for all sorts of services, including custom firmwares ;) –b-rad >>>

Thanks for all your work! I look forward to your fw touch on the +.

I’ve owned both the Live and the +. I’ve noticed a definite difference in the boot up time between these two boxes. Is there that much difference between the cpu’s, or is this just a firmware problem?

<<< edit: Only cosmetic differences for the most part, besides the content protection enabled CPU. –b-rad >>>

Just got a WDTV Live Plus the other day…The kids dig the netflix, i like the youtube and networking, it’s nice. my wdtv hd will move to the bedroom. Look forward to what you come up with on this b-rad.

I wish wd would have it so you could view your thumbnails in the way the netflix thumbs are, i have been asking them for something like that since the original wdtv.

thanks for everything as always b-rad and can’t wait till you get on this so i can customize this.

ps (it’s 119.99 on best buy.com right now, so if you bought it at the store for 149.99 you can print out the page and get your 21.60 back.)

Hey there B-Rad….
Awesome work you have done on the WDTV Live
Really looking forward to your work on the Live + now that I am a proud owner of 2 of these… :)

…BTW….the check is in the mail… ;)
Thank goodness for Paypal huh?
I will continue to periodically support your efforts… :)

They do have a thumbnail feature, the options button on the remote will give you the option to pick thumbnail view, you can then use a program called thumbgen to browse sites and get cover art, poster art, etc. and it will scan your drive (based on folder name if you want) and put those files in with your movie file and they will show up right on the WDTV

do you have an email for communications we wish to keep private (just to you)?

<<< edit: Not a public one as I have zero desire to be receiving a million random emails. You tell me why you want to contact me and I’ll consider contacting you ;) –b-rad >>>

Wonder what FW version in in the Plus. A quick text search for netflix in Live Non-Plus beta FW 1.03.22 wdtvlive.bin give lots of hits, so the FW image is most likely the same for both boxes, but netflix only enabled if Plus box detected.

Hey B-Rad, havent heard from you in a while. Is your firmware possible on the PLUS? otherwise, i’ll get the old one.

Thanks!

After stumbling upon your sight I am sad to own a plus wdtv as netflix doesn’t matter much to me…. damn damn damn. Wonder if it is to late to send it back…

B-Rad, can you provide the shuffle feature on WD TV LIVE PRO ? I have video files saved onto the root of the USB drive connected to the WDTVLive and all I need is for the files to be played automatically on power up, but in a shuffle mode.
Please Help !

<<< edit: What is a wdtv live pro? If this is a commercial project then there is no way I’ll do it for free, even if its not its of zero interest to me. –b-rad >>>

Can we assume there will be a version of WDLXTV coming for the Plus then? :) I am about to pick a couple up, but this would seal the deal….

<<< edit: Eventually yes, but its not high on my priority list as demand (and support) is not very high. –b-rad >>>

Hello,
I like to purchase this item:
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11537625 to watch the movies from external hard drive, but i also have some movies on DVD and wondering if i can connect directly this item http://www.amazon.com/Blu-Ray-USB-External-Player-DVDRW/dp/B001QA2Y9S
???
The DVD player manula says connect to Computer USB ONLY, not to docking station or other USB hubs, i assum because it get’s the power form Comupter’s USP port, but by looking at some forums found that it is possible to connect DVD player directly to this MEdia player’s USB post. Could you please conferm if that is correct ot not, or might be possible with your custom firmware. Thank you in advence,
Alex

<<< edit: Absolutely no clue, my optical drive died and when it did so did support for them. Several people have told me they’d buy me a new optical drive, but noone has, so this feature is stalled. –b-rad >>>

b-rad. I’m curious if the ability to do the netflix thing is set in the media player itself to check ip addresses for locality (I live in Canada and want to use it) Ideas?

<<< edit: of course it does not do the security check itself, that would be absolutely ridiculous! Its all server side. –b-rad >>>

I cannot find WDTV Live for sale anymore…

If the internals for the WDTV and WDTV+ are the same — except the CPU — do you think a CPU upgrade would be possible to bring netflix to the older device post-CPU update?

I guess I’m asking, are they pin-compatible?

neat thing, but what is it with the network share access ? does it use samba? which parameter is it set to – how does it access shares?
my linux dvb-receiver accesses my windows shares without problems, but wdtv-live has some difficulties.
i find docs everywhere which weird settings to set in windows, but it would be more helpful to know more about the wdtv settings. at the moment it only sometimes sees the network shares …

Hi B-Rad,
Thanks for all your work.
I just bought a Live, as that’s what they sold at costco. I didn’t realize there is a Live+. Sucks to be instantly obsolete.
Anyways, in your opinion (and others) is it worth it for me to return the item and pay an extra $30 (or so) to get the Live+. It would seem there would be advantages to being DRM free but the hacking community usually seems to free things up.
Thanks again for your work.

Hi, where do you find the time? I have been looking for a media player to buy. I like the WDTVLive+. FYI, CompUSA still has the WDTV and the WDTVLive. I could not find the WDTVLive+ on their shelves.
Do you release just the binaries or the source too? Is there a development team or just you?
What do you rhink of the Viewsonic VMP71 with the internal HD. The guts look just like the Argosy hv335t which supports bittorrents.

I know this is probably a dumb question and I am pretty sure I know the answer. But you don’t know if you don’t ask. I have a WD live. Will the WD live + software work on the WD live. If not is it possible to make it work on the WD live?

August 28th, 2011 21:59

I recently bought one of the WD TV Live Media boxes and Live in Australia.
The problem was and still is, that the firmware dosn’t cover australian websites for tv amd ovies.
Is this something that you can do or is it something that is on the cards with WD oer is there a work around that I am not aware of..??

Thankyou for your patience
Paul

<<< edit: Hi Paul, I don’t live in australia…and I have no clue on what WD intends to do or not to do…The only thing you can do is politely make a request in the UMSP forum and see if anyone wants to develop a plugin for one of the sites. –brad >>>

I don’t have aproblem donating, but I wan to check it out before I donate. If it is okay, I would like a liftime subscription :)
