WDLXTV-PLUS for wdtv live plus

It’s been many weeks in the working, and there has been overwhelming demand for it…and it’s finally here…Yes, I’m talking about wdlxtv-plus for the wdtv live plus! There were many small kinks to overcome and minutiae to deal with, but I feel pretty much everything is taken care of. The following video below is a sneak preview of wdlxtv-plus in action.

At this point wdlxtv-plus is only available to donators. Anyone who has donated, or donates during this preview period, more than $5 towards the development of wdlxtv-plus will be granted access to the firmware. In addition during this period anyone who donates $10 or more will also get lifetime access to the wdlxtv online update server that will be coming to life sometime soon. Once the wdlxtv-plus fundraising period has ended, lifetime access to the online update server will be available to supporters who have donated $20 or more.

What will your wdlxtv-plus donation go towards?

  • Buying equipment – devices for testing, spare wdtv’s in case of bricking, dev time, etc

  • server costs
  • development costs of WDTVExt for wdtv live plus

I will be splitting the donations with bogdan petriou, the developer of the amazing WDTVExt software. Without WDTVExt wdlxtv is just not the same and bogdan deserves support for putting so much effort into allowing the full customization/extension of the OSD.

What is missing from wdlxtv-plus right now:

  • No moviesheets -

  • No WDTVExt
  • No WMAPro audio
  • No force hdmi

Everything else from wdlxtv-live-0.4.2.2 is included. The firmware runs rock solid :-D

Psychodad was able to produce a version of autores for wdlxtv-plus, but FORCEHDMI is not available at the moment–so there can be some issues with some displays not working in all resolutions. This is a bug with the official firmware, hopefully its eventually sorted. Big thanks to him, be sure to send him thanks on the forum.

This fundraising period will last a few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has already donated towards the development of WDLXTV-Plus, your support has been much appreciated!!! I will start emailing links to download the firmware to anyone who has left a wdlxtv-plus note in their donation later today. If you donated, but forgot to say it was towards wdlxtv-plus shoot a mail to my paypal address saying so and I’ll get you sorted. If you haven’t donated and are dieing to get ahold of wdlxtv-plus, well now would be a good time ;-) $5 gets you wdlxtv-plus, and $10+ gets you wdlxtv-plus and lifetime online updates.

The fundraising period is over, it was very successfull. Thank you to everyone! Check the forum for information on releases and discussion. You are still welcome to donate $10 for lifetime access to the online update server though :-)

Sign up on the forum and send me a pm as well. I’ll add you to the donators group and you’ll get access to an area where you can discuss wdlxtv-plus during this preview period.

Sweet. Can’t wait. Just got my box yesterday, and the freaking thing won’t show my shares in Network Server (No media found…). Hopefully this ROM will change that, or at least let me hook up in NFS ; )

Nice to see it coming along. When you add movie sheets would it be possible to use one folder to store all the movie sheet data for a given directory? This would be much neater than storing all that information in such a messy way that I have seen before.

My comment is actually a question. Does this firmware offer support for the WDTV Live PLus to access shares from a machine (W7, XP, Svr03) on a domain? I just found out from WD that they do not support it… after I bought the unit.

Thanks

Hi b-rad. Sorry for straying away from the topic, but I would like to know if there’s any progress in hacking WD TV Mini? In response to one of the comments posted on your blog on July 3rd you wrote:

“mini is not currently hackable, I tried but the entire device and firmware format is unlike any of the other wdtv’s and the chipset isn’t the same either”

My question is: if Mini’s not currently hackable then will it ever be hackable? What does actually make it unhackable – your lack of skills (no offence ;) or the device’s cryptic architecture and firmware format? Is there any way for you or maybe other programmers to get round it? And lastly, will you ever give it a try again or have you definitely abandoned the idea of hacking it already?

Anyway, keep on working, pal. You’re doing a really great job to the whole WD TV community. :) Thanks in advance for any response. Cheers!

<<< edit: I already spent money to buy the device and a couple days trying to make sense of the firmware. Its not worth my time for such a fringe device. I have enough on my plate already. –b-rad >>>

Will you be continuing to update when you’ve sent more download links out?

<<< edit: what do you mean? I’ll be sending out the second batch of links briefly. For the next 4 days I will attempt to send out links once a day, but I will be very busy on my trip…will try though. –b-rad >>>

Haibane
September 2nd, 2010 14:32

I guess nevermind. I was just confused by the process. I wasn’t sure if you were doing batches at a time or if I had missed it or something and you were already gone.

<<< edit: Second batch has been mailed, you should have link and forum permissions now too ;-) –b-rad >>>

Donated just now. U completely deserve it for ur work. If u post a donate link for bogdan petriou, I would be more than willing to donate to him as well if it would assist him in making Moviesheets available any sooner. I would also like to encourage anyone else reading these comments or following forums related to this topic, to donate as well. B-rad has worked very hard on this ROM and has put up with a lot sh-hit, from people that think he should do this work for free. Well put ur dollars where ur expectations are. Thanks B-rad, keep up the good work.

Installed this live+ firmware about an hour ago… I have to say this was the fastest and easiest to install firmware replacement I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying. I think I could have talked my mom through this one (after I emailed her the modified options file). I look forward to putting this one through all the paces. I already notice better stability than the stock firmware such as when trying to switch from ALL to VIDEO on the mediafly channel (still locks up, but not 100% anymore as long as I wait for the channel to load).

Hey B-Rad – made a $20 donation today.

I’ve been looking for a half decent product to act as a media player for quite some time. I made my decision on the WD HD Live plus based on quite a number of positive reviews. The one that was the kicker was when they talked about WDLXTV project and that they highly anticipated a release for the plus version.

I don’t currently have an HD tv, just an older 27″ tube based tv that was given to me and my wife when a relative upgraded. Hey money’s tight and I’ll take what I get hehehe :) Anyhow the video quality is still awesome even though there are no HDMI inputs on the tv.

I have one question – what media server are you using? I am running Linux Mint, with Media Tomb. Unfortunately I’m not crazy about Media Tomb. Its database is slow and it’s upnp/dlna options aren’t all that impressive.

I work in the IT department of a small company. I was thinking of setting up a side business building system, cleaning out viruses, etc for a few extra bucks. The idea I had was to to fill my media server my my and my wifes collection of dvd movies, tv episodes, etc (we have well over 300 dvd’s between the two of us lol) and put them all on the media server (currently has 8tb of space), and let customers watch a movie or two while I work on fixing or building their system.

The improvements I’ve seen in your video over the current firmware are so impressive I know it will work out well :) I would LOVE to see moviesheets implemented sometime in the future. I will see about donating again when I have spare funds available.

Take care and have a good one! Sorry about the long message, I’m a bit long winded because I’m that impressed :)

This is a comment for Ptraugot – regarding his network shares….

What sort of problems were you having with Network Shares and the WD Live Plus?

A network share would be like that of a shared folder. It will be accessible by anyone on the same network. In WD Live Plus, under Video, scroll down one and you should see the option for Network Share. This should see any of your shared folders. If your wireless, you may need to check settings on your router. On the Dlink DIR-655, there are a few advanced settings that will literally block any connection from seeing your computer – even if its on the same network. I had that issue before for slightly different issue (RDP between systems).

If your using an actual media server, it will need to be running in the background in order to work.
Out of curiosity what is your software architecture – windows or linux?

If your using Windows – Windows Media Player 11 from what I understand contains a built in upnp/dlna media server. It will need to be running in order for your movies to be shared.

If your using Linux, there are a few different media servers available – such as Media Tomb, and your experience may very on it. Here is a link that may help you on deciding on a media server – http://www.rbgrn.net/content/21-how-to-choose-dlna-media-server-windows-mac-os-x-or-linux

The other question you need to ask is why you need a media server. For most instances – running a network share (right click on folder, share this folder) is all anyone needs. WD Live Plus reads it just fine (although with Windows there appears to be some weird glitches that rarely occur with shared folders and linux clients. Rare but do occur). The WD Live Plus currently is reading all my Network shares, from my linux laptop, my media server, and my wife’s Windows 7 Ultimate laptop.

As for the server, you should only really need the server if you need to play video that is compiled in a format that the WD Live TV can not read natively. Given the large extent of the media formats it can read, most people won’t need to transcode the video. Other options that media server software can offer is giving you the ability to transcode additional online media sources (podcasts, online video sites like Hulu and YouTube, etc) But again with the amount of support already built in to the WD Live Plus, and the additional options configured with the new firmware that B-Rad has come out with, this again reduces the need for an actual media server.

Hey there B-Rad Awesome job :)

I’ve donated $20 the other day. I’ll definatly donate more as spare funds are available. This project is something that needs to be supported.

Is there any sort of documentation kicking around for the non Plus version that I can peruse? I have the wd live plus, but have been having issues with the thumbnails (which seems to be a common complaint on the WD forums).

Hello, I have been using your firmware for the Live Plus and I’d like to report a few bugs (they are all intermittent – the unit has occasionally worked perfectly):

-Sometimes there is no audio via HDMI

-Sometimes the display detects the wrong video resolution for HDMI

-Sometimes there is no video or audio via HDMI

-All of the above might be some kind of HDMI handshake issue. I have an Optoma HD66 projector, a Samsung 46B650 TV and a Denon AVR-791 receiver – in case this info helps you debug. I have tried going through the receiver as well as connecting directly to the display.

-Sometimes the network shares do not mount (I have HDs connected to an Airport Extreme). However, this is still more reliable than the standard WD firmware.

I can provide more info via email if needed.

Thanks!

I was working with the plus. I am getting an intermittent problem where the plus reboots when i hit the option key. I will reproduce this and add a list of all actions and what screen i was on when this happened.

Otherwise …it totally rocks. The netflix is not really worth it but the dvd navigation is sweet. I look forward to the moviesheets. I love those on my live’s. Great work!!

Darren
September 24th, 2010 09:40

All, I have been searching and researching network media players for the past several days and thanks to the forums have decided to get a WD TV device. The only problem is, which one should I get Live Plus or just Live? Will there be continued development on non-Plus devices or will most of the future development be for the Plus?

The sooner the responses the sooner I can buy the right device!

Thanks in advance,
-Darren

I had the impression (maybe incorrectly) that wdlxtv-plus could play normal DVD video disks connected with an external USB DVD drive?

September 30th, 2010 11:22

My question is also does wdlxtv-plus DVD videos connected to the WD with an external DVD drive?
Actually this is the only function I would like to use the most. Do I need the whole wdlxtv-plus firmware or the DVDMOD will do, and is DVDMOD compatible with the WD TV Live Plus?

Thank You.

I am a little late on the donation for this firmware so I hope it is useful for future updates. And one question, I have an egreat m34a, sigma chip, but on it I can change the screen size (in finer increments) volume color contrast form the player yet these attributes seem to be missing from WD use of the processor. Why Why Why I know that the chip is not the same chip so were these abilities removed from the WD chip?

Hello, sent a donation! Waiting for the Link to DL! THank you in advance!

CheapSkate
October 12th, 2010 16:38

I honestly think it’s absolutely ABSURD that you REQUIRE donations now for something that was previously developed for the community. I’m a open source developer and I find it sickening that once dev’s do something and they then see the opportunity to gouge someone out of money they do so. I could donate $1,000′s of dollars as money is not a problem for me but it’s the premise of the way you force it now.

And I’ll tell you my one reason why I think forced donations is absurd. When you flash your box and have any problems it’s the COMMUNITY that is going to help you get your box working. This dev will take your donation and give you nothing in return. If it works great if not then your possibly bricking a $100 box and when the firmware is free it’s a pretty easy risk, you get what you pay for….but when you CHARGE people they expect much more and honestly I just don’t see this guy giving you ANYTHING should that happen. It’s the community that will help you.

<<< edit: I’m sorry you feel that way. There was never any forcing here. This was a simple temporary fundraising period, which ended almost three weeks ago. If you go to forum.wdlxtv.com you will see all firmwares available for free download… brad >>>

Funny the CheapSkate post just came in. I for one just donated ($15) for Brad. I like his work and wanted to support him and the development. Maybe the community will help solve my startup issues, but Brad is the one who will lead new development. How does he get the hardware to support, if it is not by donations ( either cash here or via a donated piece of hardware). Keep up the good work Brad.

Cheapskate, it’s hard not to take your comment as a troll. I’m going to assume that you are serious and I can only assume that you know nothing about B-Rad and all the work he has done. He has been creating firmware mods for the WDTV pretty much since the first model came out (for free), has created mods for every new model since then (for free) and he helps out tonnes of people on the forum (http://wdtvforum.com) on a daily basis. He has spent MASSIVE amounts of time and energy (and $ on new boxes in order to create new mods) and has ASKED for donations to help cover his costs (not demanded). The donation period was clearly stated as temporary and he has since released his latest mod for free. Even though I bought my Live+ after the donation period was over I was more than happy to donate as a thank you for all of his hard work that I’ve benefitted from (I had a Gen1 model that I’ve flash quite a few of his mods on) and I know that I’ll continue to benefit from as he puts out even more mods in the future.

October 23rd, 2010 04:12

Hi Brad,

I was not able to find the source code of the modified firmware. By goggling for it (after searching on your blog, wiki and forum), I found this guy complaining about something I think he is right: http://dren.dk/wdtv.html

IMO it might help to grown the developers community around wdlxtv releasing the sources (or make then more public if they are available already).

Cheers,

<<< edit: You can go download the GPL package from WD yourself. Everything I’ve done is published somewhere or another. ;) –brad >>>

October 24th, 2010 16:01

Completely disagree with CheapSkate comment. There must be 1000′s of hours spent on developing and supporting the firmware not to mention the forum responses.

Without this effort we would have the plain-jane WDTV box with all of its limitations, and the spin-off applications like WDTVExt would never have come about. I hardly call $5 a “gouge” and it was not forced upon you.

Just donated $25 and consider it money well spent!

<<< edit: Thank you Markster and thank you for all your support everyone. Haters will be hatin and trolls will be trolls, c’est la vie. –brad >>>

November 6th, 2010 14:04

Just wanted to thank you for all your hard work and making this firmware available. It is 100% better than the default WDTV Live! version. I find the reboot option very handy, as I noticed sometimes the machine would get sluggish accessing my network shares after a longer period of inactivity (ie. off for a few days).

if you could add some on-screen information on the CODEC and audio streams used, it would be great.

Brad
November 8th, 2010 11:13

I gladly just offered up a donation of $10. While I’m one for doesn’t discourage using software acquired for free, I do think that if something is worth what it costs that you should support it.

I’ll be testing this out later this evening and can’t wait to see how it looks. Thanks.

I also disagree with CheapSkate. I understood it was a temp fundraising effort. I don’t even have a Live+ and I donated. I appreciate the work that has gone into all of the firmware updates that he has done and wanted to express that appreciation.

If I had a Live+ I could have just waited a month and downloaded it for free. I find NOTHING wrong with offering something up a bit early for those who are willing to pay for it, and at $5 and $10 the cost was inexpensive enough as most people don’t hesitate to drop $5 on a coffee or drink at a bar, so what’s $5 to get something useful early.

Keep up the good work!
