WDTV firmware: 1.02.07_DVDMOD-0.4.4

DVDMOD is a custom firmware I made for the Western Digital WDTV to enable optical drive usage. I have remixed all official firmware releases and added optical drive support via cd-manager. Yes, this means you can boot with a usb dvd drive connected and play from it on your WDTV. The only limitation is that since dvd drives are officially unsupported you must have a supported (aka FAT32, NTFS, HFS,…) drive/flashdisk inserted. If there is no supported drive in the WDTV reports ‘no storage present’ and you will be unable to navigate to the browser. DVDMOD also enables you to use ext2/ext3/reiserFS/xfs drives with your WDTV. This firmware is flashed to your WDTV like the updates that have come from Western Digital.

Made sure I got this released before I left town, didn’t get a chance to test it though so no guarantees. ;)

1.02.07-DVDMOD-0.4.4

Changelog:

0.4.4
* based on firmware 1.02.07
* XFS filesystem support is back in
* added md5sums to files

Go to the DVDMOD page to download the latest version.

Don’t forget to check out the WDTV HD player unofficial firmware wiki page.

I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time hacking the WDTV firmware, so if you appreciate my efforts please donate a little something using the link below : ) Thanks & enjoy.

Hi b-rad!

Just to inform you that the DVDMOD-0.4.4 does not work for me. All previous version worked with my Samsung SE-S084B.

Did some troubleshooting and noticed that as long as my DVD Drive is plugged into the WDTV, upon booting it will hang at WDTV logo indefinately.

If I switch off and disconnect the DVD drive from the WDTV, switch it on again, the unit will boot normally. Plugging in the drive after booting does not help. WDTV will fail to see the drive.

Hope it’s clear enough for you :)
Thanks.

I have the exact same issue. although I didn’t try to use the previous releases so I don’t know if it works or not.

Exarkun, how about the subtitles, is it working for you? how about the WDLXTV firmware?

Hi, all
Probably I know why sometimes DVD was not found as input device with 1.02.07-DVDMOD-0.4.4.
I had thit problem when I have tried to connect USB flashdisk to USB1 and USB LG DVD writer to USB2.
WD TV didn’t recognize DVD writer.
Then I changed USB flashdisk to USB2 and connect DVD writer to USB1 it start to work perfectly.
Maybe this will help you.

Hiya, thanks for your hard work. Unfortunately DVDMOD-0.4.4 does not work with my Xbox Hd-DVD drive or LG GSA-E40N as the WDTV logo hangs when either of the drives is plugged in when the device is booting up. The WDTV works fine when there is no dvd drive plugged in.

<<< edit: fixed, stay tuned… –b-rad >>>

I understand that the 1.02.08 release no longer supports USB hubs. Thats a show stopper for me. But now WD-TV is up to 1.02.10. Does anyone understand what the state on USB hubs are? If they work again, then I would like to see a new WDXLTV release for this firmware.

Of course, what I “Would Like.” should be read as “I humbly request.”, since I wouldn’t be doing any of the work.

Cheers.

<<< edit: hubs are still disabled in 1.02.10, BUT I am about to make a new release that automagically mounts additional devices so stay tuned. –b-rad >>>

So can I connect a blu-ray optical drive to work with this? I know the file system is different but I was just curious. If it is or will be possible just let me know im considering purchasing one of these and your firmwares and apps look amazing so thanks.

<<< edit: if its compatible it’ll work…read the forums to see what is & isn’t. –b-rad >>>

I use DVDMOD. It’s great for me to see the video! But external subtitle cannot show. Only the way to merge the subtitle inside can see it.

Could you please resolve it, Thanks!!

<<< edit: I’ve tried a few different things to no avail. As this doesn’t affect me at all it’d take a decent donation to do serious research & get working. –b-rad >>>

Hi B-Rad
Does this allow to write dvds from video files in usb storage?
if not ,Is this possible in other way now or in future on wdtv?
thanx.

<<< edit: no, this is to be able to use optical drives. It might be possible to burn dvd’s in the future, but it would require a decent donation (aka no personal interest in it working) for me to see about getting implemented. Might not work either due to small amount of available memory. –b-rad >>>

Hi b-rad,

Any chance of seeing a 1.02.10 based DVDmod firmware anytime soon? Some of us prefer this simple firmware to pair with our WDTV.

Thanks!

<<< edit: How about a donation to get it done? –b-rad >>>

Hi Mate. does this version supports Blu-Ray Player and Ripping capability as well or can it be done at all. Cheers…

<<< edit: I know a couple external blu-ray players work, which do I have no clue as I don’t have one. As for ripping…maybe with an Optware package, but it’d be slow. –b-rad >>>

Hi B-rad,

thanks a lot for your great job!

I have just a question: do you think it could be possible to use a DVD writer with our magic wdtv box and to use it to record movies from an USB HD to a DVD?
My dream is to connect a DVB USB key to the WDTV and to be able to record TV to an USB HD or a DVD.
For this, we’ll need to install the DVB USB driver to manage it on the WDTV…
Do you think such a thing is possible whith our magic box ?
Thanks in advance for your help and regards

< << edit: might be possible, but not much horsepower in wdtv to be doing lots of encoding and burning might be much with lack of memory. --b-rad >>>
