WDLXTV – enhanced WDTV firmware 0.5.7

WDLXTV is a souped up unofficial firmware for the Western Digital WDTV. It is based off the 1.02.11 firmware, but with many extra features. Similar to my dvdmod firmware, this is a permanent flash, just like an official upgrade. There is no Linux knowledge required to use WDLXTV.

Joe pointed out to me this new FW revision, so I whipped up something good for everyone ;-) This is for the most part untested…I flashed it and streamed a few 1080p titles of my NFS, but I’m heading out for the night now so won’t be doing much testing for a couple days. Be on the lookout the next few weeks for a new version with most of my scripts rewritten in c, to lighten the system load and hopefully be a bit more stable.

If you enjoy my work please make a donation. My time is thin and donations help focus me on producing new & better versions. Thanks. :-)

0.5.7
* Now based on firmware 1.02.11
* includes Steve.JC's patched mount.watch (untested!!)

You may find the latest release at the WDLXTV page.

You may download this release here.

If you feel you have something you’d like to contribute or would like to submit a patch, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Post any bugs you come across at wdtvforum in the WDLXTV-0.5.X thread. Don’t forget to check out the WDTV HD player unofficial firmware wiki.

I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time hacking the WDTV firmware, so if you appreciate my efforts please donate a little something using the link below : ) Thanks & enjoy.

Problems with the new release…. WDLXTV 0.5.7

Hi b-rad, I installed this new release and the dts wav sound not plays correctly, the wdtv reproduces a molest white noise…

It’s curious, because with your previous firmware WDLXTV 0.5.6.2, I don’t have any problem… I play dts sound corretly!!!

If I put the official firmware, I’ve the same problem, the wdtv only reproduces with noise (with version 1.02.10 and 1.02.11)…

Any solution???

Thanks.

<<< edit: Your comments were not deleted, they were awaiting moderation. I’ve been able to reproduce the issue you describe. I’ll see if I missed something, but if the official fw’s make white noise as well there isn’t much i can do. –b-rad >>>

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your release and the inclusion of mount.patch … even if you”ve called me Ernis.

Everything is fine.

Hello B-RAD,

I’ve tested your new firmware but it seems that the WDTV does not get anymore an IP. Until now, with 0.5.6.1 everything was perfect – I could FTP, telnet; I could share from my PC through CIFS, NFS. I can even share through Samba the files on the WD Passport attached to my WDTV except for NFS share – by the way here I get an error saying : exportfs: Warning /tmp/media/usb/USB2/.806…COA does not support NFS export. The WD Passport attached to WDTV is partitioned as NTFS. I’m sorry about bothering you with these but I’m not a Linux expert and have already spent 3 weeks trying to figure it out where I’m wrong.

Regards and thanks in advance,

IonutM.

<<< edit: my minimal testing to see if 0.5.7 worked was playing 1080p mkv’s off my NFS, so I assure you its not universally broken. Try and leave your adapter unplugged for a few minutes then plug it in ~10s after you plug the wdtv in. As for your other issues, the forums would be a better place to debug them. –b-rad >>>

First of thanx many for your work.
The latest release 0.5.7 seems to stop respecting custom screen_save.png in the root directory.
welcome jpg is still supported.
Besides this: I have two WDs in my network (one 56 and one 5.7), streaming of NTFS – everything works just lovely and as I could tell identical.
Mounting NTFS with cyrillic in file names (if anyone cares) worked fine after I realized that I need to put it like “xmount //192.168.1.110/MOVIESERVER MOV1 cifs user=wdtv,password=wdtv,iocharset=utf8″

<<< edit: forgot to do some patching to enable screen_saver.png. That and some other tweaks are being polished up now and should be ready in a couple days. –b-rad >>>

Congratulations for your tools. Its help me to link my MBWE and my WDTV. It’s really great the examples given inside to mount units. I have donate a few amount to b-rad. I have only one suggestion: a kind of tutorial to ones, like me, who doesn’t have any knowledge about linux, telnet etc (like the config/mount files, but with .txt end); designed to newbies trying to become smarted in this issue. Once more, congratulations b-rad! Fabio (Sao Paulo, Brazil)

<<< edit: Cheers, thanks for the donation. I’ve been planning a tutorial to show my exact system setup, but not being a noob myself (and not using windows–so no worry about file extensions) I will probably still miss obvious (to me) things. There are many tutorials out there if you look around though, that might be more suitable, noob-on-noob style ;-) –b-rad >>>

Hello.
I wanted to know if with this firmware i can connect a wireless usb so that i will be able to connect to the internet. also i wanted to know if its excpected to have a hebrew srt support for subtitles because now there is still none…

<<< edit: with the right additions you can connect a wireless adapter, wdtvforum has ample information about it…I have no adapter and therefore no help.

As for hebrew support, it is much more complicated than I’d hope. Maybe someday, but as of now no. –b-rad >>>

Hi, just for info because you have changed mount.watch in new fw 0.5.7.1

juanmacar has found a pb in mount.watch for lot of folders with the cmd ls “$f”`

the script exit with an error “input line too long”.

The solution was in line 31 and 13 I change the
CONTENT=`ls “$f”`
with
CONTENT=`ls “$f” | head`

bye

<<< edit: it crashed for me, so I noticed and did the same thing to patch it…but i never liked how mount.watch caused constant disk activity and therefore removed that part and rewrote the whole thing. –b-rad >>>

Just a Question I have upgraded to this version I have several questions :

Im trying to solve no IP problem, when i change net.config on my pen to test again I have to do another firmware upgrade right? (by changing the version number?) is this correct?

Because im trying to do this but when i change the version to XXX.2 to XXX.3 after the upgrade I see that he has the version XXX.2 what Im doing wrong ?

<<< edit: no need to reflash when you change net.config, its parsed every boot. The version number is inside of the FW itself, what you enter into the ver file is just a formality. –b-rad >>>

Thanks for the great work b-rad, with a little playing around i’ve got my wdtv running with the nfs app and streaming HD from my home PC. I’d like to be able to upload the nfs app directly onto the wdtv so as not to need a usb key, is that possible?

Also, I was trying to watch some home movie clips (m2ts) and i could only play the first video, when I stopped it and tried to play the next it asked me if i wanted to start from the beginning (press cancel) or resume playback. After watching that I switched to another .m2ts movie and i just got a black screen, nothing happened. All i could do was go back.

I’m using the latest 0.5.7

Thanks

<<< edit: the NFS files are too big to fit in the firmware nowadays, WD goofed by using such a small NAND. As for the stop playing bug…well a small minority of users get affected by it occasionally, its root has never been debugged…different things work for different peeps to get it to go away, seems mostly voodoo :-) –b-rad >>>

Nice work B-Rad.

Regard 0.5.7.1, am using in conjunction with the 1.3.1 wifi app in the smartp thread, the lilibabe osd and your nfs pack.

As reported by a number of people, the remote fails to respond to FF/Rew/Stop/Pause randomly, once it stops it doesn’t restart until full reboot. Its not the remote sensor issue as home/power eventually work and options works most times. I think its probably a 0.5.7.1 bug as WD seem to have yanked that pre ware.

Thanks for your work, I look forward to the next release =)

<<< edit: I’m not affected by this bug, I imagine if many are WD will be issuing new version soon. –b-rad >>>

I just installed 0.5.7 and put my old usbstick which has nfs.app.bin in the root.

# xmount 192.168.1.3:/Movies Media nfs

I there anything I’m doing wrong ?

First of all, a big special thanx for your work! I have a very important – at least for me – question about an additional feature. Is it possible to implement a sleep timer? Something that will auto-turn off the WD after a given time, 0.5-1-1.5-etc hours?

Hi!

If i mount 2 nfs shares like this in net.mounts:

xmount 192.168.1.10:/movies mov nfs
xmount 192.168.1.10:/tv tv nfs

they mount in the filesystem (on the usb stick as they should), but the wdtv says no file found.

If i only mount one of these shares, everything works perfectly. Any ideas?

Hi… Frst of all, great job with these modified firmwares… awsome stuff…

I am having some issues with response time from my wdtv… Since i updated from 0.5.6.1 to 0.5.7.1 i am having an issue a bit painful.

If start to watch a movie file and i want to pause it or stop it the wdtv does not respond… i takes ages to do so… i press the remote like crazy but nothing happens… after a few minutes it does…

This is something that never happend with 0.5.6.1…

Any ideas

Thank you

Unfortunately, I got the same error using USB2LAN, the remote is not working, no STOP, PAUSE, etc. Can you please check this issue that appears to be available in all the firmware versions?

Using ext3-boot firmware this is not present, everything is working well.

Hi b-rad,
Been thinking about installing your firmware for a while, somehow never got around to it but now may just be the time (how’s that for an opening, eh?). The official 1.02.11 firmware fixed the audiosync problems I’d been having on some mkv files (you try watching Seven Samurai with the sound out of sync…not good) and even some avi files, so right now I am very happy with it all except of course with the bloody boot-up time, and sloooooooooooow thumbnail loading. Reading your description it seems you’ve greatly improved both, and this would hit the spot for me, as I don’t need anything else, I’ve a dedicated external HDD permanently connected, I update it once a month or so, so no need for LAN/Samba etc – all I want is better/faster thumbnails, and maybe boot times.
After this long-winded explanation, I am finally getting to what I am trying to say – would your firmware improve those and not muck up anything else?
Cheers in advance,
Doru

<<< edit: sounds like it would improve the areas you speak of, try and see. –b-rad >>>

Hi,

I’ve got some issues with mounting ext3 partitions. If I turn off WD and then turn on disk dosen’t mount – only unpluging power supply or system reset fixing ext3 mounts. So hotpluging dosen’t work. Any clue how to make it work?

I’ve noticed olso some bug or hardware problem -don’t know exacly. When I’m listening music for a while – until screensaver appears, remote control dosen’t work and only thing I can do to make it work is to put remote control in front of the device and press button. Then device is awaking and everything works good. Andy ideas what it would be?

Best regards
