It’s been many weeks in the working, and there has been overwhelming demand for it…and it’s finally here…Yes, I’m talking about wdlxtv-plus for the wdtv live plus! There were many small kinks to overcome and minutiae to deal with, but I feel pretty much everything is taken care of. The following video below is a sneak preview of wdlxtv-plus in action.

<del datetime="2010-10-13T01:18:26+00:00">At this point wdlxtv-plus is only available to donators.</del> Anyone who has donated, or donates during this preview period, more than $5 towards the development of wdlxtv-plus will be granted access to the firmware. In addition during this period anyone who donates $10 or more will also get lifetime access to the wdlxtv online update server that will be coming to life sometime soon. Once the wdlxtv-plus fundraising period has ended, lifetime access to the online update server will be available to supporters who have donated $20 or more.

What will your wdlxtv-plus donation go towards?

Buying equipment – devices for testing, spare wdtv’s in case of bricking, dev time, etc

server costs

development costs of WDTVExt for wdtv live plus

I will be splitting the donations with bogdan petriou, the developer of the amazing WDTVExt software. Without WDTVExt wdlxtv is just not the same and bogdan deserves support for putting so much effort into allowing the full customization/extension of the OSD.

What is missing from wdlxtv-plus right now:

<del datetime="2010-10-13T01:20:56+00:00">No moviesheets -</del>

No WDTVExt

No WMAPro audio

No force hdmi

Everything else from wdlxtv-live-0.4.2.2 is included. The firmware runs rock solid

Psychodad was able to produce a version of autores for wdlxtv-plus, but FORCEHDMI is not available at the moment–so there can be some issues with some displays not working in all resolutions. This is a bug with the official firmware, hopefully its eventually sorted. Big thanks to him, be sure to send him thanks on the forum.

This fundraising period will last a few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has already donated towards the development of WDLXTV-Plus, your support has been much appreciated!!! I will start emailing links to download the firmware to anyone who has left a wdlxtv-plus note in their donation later today. If you donated, but forgot to say it was towards wdlxtv-plus shoot a mail to my paypal address saying so and I’ll get you sorted. If you haven’t donated and are dieing to get ahold of wdlxtv-plus, well now would be a good time $5 gets you wdlxtv-plus, and $10+ gets you wdlxtv-plus and lifetime online updates.

The fundraising period is over, it was very successfull. Thank you to everyone! Check the forum for information on releases and discussion. You are still welcome to donate $10 for lifetime access to the online update server though

Sign up on the forum and send me a pm as well. I’ll add you to the donators group and you’ll get access to an area where you can discuss wdlxtv-plus during this preview period.

Something arrived for me today, a shiny new WDTV Live Plus. In the following article I’ll describe my thoughts on it and tear in a bit to see whats going on. I’ll be looking for differences in base operation and hardware, comparing it to a WDTV Live (1?) along the way.

I’m not going to repeat pictures that haven’t changed a bit compared to the original WDTV Live. The outer box is the only new thing here, the inner contents contain and look the exact same as the original. Here’s the outer box.

Ok, thats out of the way…Now I’ll tear in a bit. First things first, A gigantic picture of the main board in all its nakedness.

Heres an even better pic with all stickers removed:

Next up is the initial bootlog of the system. This is obtained by connecting a 3.3V ttl serial->usb cable to the socket on the board. Board with serial cable connected ooks like this:

link to boot log

I’ve hightlighted the few interesting bits I think might be of interest. The only real difference between original WDTV Live and the WDTV Live Plus is the CPU, the Plus comes with a sigma8654. The sigma8654 is required because of the Netflix functionality, it is the ‘copy protection’ enabled variant of the sigma8655 that is in the original. Do you notice anything special at the end of the boot log? No shell prompt! The serial console comes locked down. No casual plug and go inspection, no instant hacking & playing…Requires a bit of tinkering and some work. Luckily I know my way around sigma boards and will be able to let myself in the back door soon enough. Right now though I’m gonna have to watch some Netflix, since I’m down in Washington visiting some friends…

I’ll be updating this post sometime soon with a fw dump and more detailed system analysis–from the inside. Maybe even a fw to install too, we’ll see

Be sure to check back.

Looking for a place to discuss? here is a good place.
