WDLXTV-Live is an unofficial homebrew firmware for the Western Digital WD TV Live. It enables a wide range of extra functionality which is missing from the official firmware, such as bittorrent, webserver, NZB, SSH, FTP, etc. I’ve done my best to make everything as easily configurable as possible, but it does require a little bit of work on your own. All of the settings are located in S00custom-options, which is included in the zipfile of every release. Open the file in a text editor and peruse your options. There are other files included in every zip that are worth reading as well, the README contains default passwords and general information and net.mounts contains sample lines to mount your remote shares. If you need help there is a forum link at the bottom of the page. If you are a power user then you’ll be able to harness your Linux skills and fly off into the world of homebrew, wondering why you delayed any longer than you did.

This version is mostly a maintenance release to fix all the issues with rtorrent & rutorrent. There are also a handful of other bug patches & fixes, and a couple small new bits, that you may or may not notice.

0.4.2.2
 * recompiled rtorrent with proper xml-rpc support for rutorrent
* upgraded to rutorrent-3.1
* rutorrent plugins are started when rtorrent starts so RSS/etc work immediately
* fixed issue causing rtorrent not to restart if it was started with RTORRENT_DIR not set
* fixed rtorrent 'pausing' issue
* included all rutorrent plugins (configure via /conf/rutorrent.plugins.conf)
 * Zoster's UMSP patches for svn plugin self-enabling
* removed deprecated files for lighttpd/deluge/python
* fixed typo in untar of /conf/umsp.tgz
* UMSP SVN plugin download can be disabled (UMSP_SVN=OFF)
* disabled IP obtain at boot for faster boot time
* upgraded to php5-cgi-5.3.2-1 (fixes pdo.so/suhosin.so/gd.so)
* included php5-geoip
* included rtmpdump-2.3-1
* random WDLXTV motd
* MovieSheet & WDTVExt plugin Reloader debug messages turned off (see MOVIESHEET_DEBUG & RELOADER_DEBUG)
 * set PANDORA=OFF to disable pandora binary and save memory + hide it from the OSD
* actually include bagira's hungarian localization
* disabled automatic NTP at boot for faster boot time
* Optional WDLXTV census, disabled by default (to enable WDLXTV_CENSUS=ON)
* changed all symlinks in /var from /tmp -> /tmp/.root/var, so they aren't lost to the clutter
* fixed ifconfig calling net.mounts at boot, pausing OSD if DISABLE_ETHERNET_ON_STANDBY=ON
 * updated net.mounts examples to include ro flag to prevent Spinning-Circle-Of-Doom
* changed xmount to mount CIFS/NFS ro if rw is not explicitly specified to prevent SCOD
* changed jaggy Shoutcast icon with PsychoTHC's shoutcast icon
*** BUGS:
* no thumbs in first two levels of local folders view (still)
* unrar button in webend is broken

Lot of changes for a maintenance release eh? Well I think I took care of most of the bugs in the fw, and even added a couple little extra bits for good measure Read on for the details.

The big problem with 0.4.2.1 was rtorrent. Well I’ve recompiled it with proper xmlrpc support, then I upgraded rutorrent to 3.1 and got all the updated plugins. All the plugins work, or at least don’t give errors when they load. I fixed all the issues with diskspace being wrong, and RTORRENT_DIR not bein abided by too. While I was at it I corrected the deprecated options in rtorrent.rc to make everything as compatible as possible with the current rtorrent. I also added in the command needed to start rutorrent plugins when rtorrent starts, which means plugins like RSS can work from boot now. rtorrent should be sorted. Just remember: RTORRENT_DIR is integral to rtorrent & rutorrent’s operation, so it *must* be set correctly.

Now since I did a lot of tinkering to rtorrent in 0.4.2.2 you should start fresh with all your config files. Do the following from telnet/ssh, or find the corresponding files in ftp and delete them:

rm /conf/rtorrent.rc
rm /conf/rutorrent.*

Since we’re doing a bit of house cleaning, how about we delete deprecated files too :-p

rm /conf/deluge*
rm /conf/lighttpd*

The above two lines should remove the old un-needed files.

I spaced and forgot bagira’s hungarian translation in 0.4.2.1, so it has been included in the firmware for 0.4.2.2. See S00custom-options for how to enable it.

Now I don’t use Pandora, and I know that everyone outside of North America can’t use it either…and the menu icon just bugs the heck outta me…So, I have included a plugin to disable the Pandora binary and hide the menu icon completely. This saves some memory and gets the useless thing outta the way Due to HidePandora being a system plugin it is not accessible through the WDTVExt Plugins menu. It is enabled disabled with telnet/ssh/S00custom-options. There is one extra step to get it enabled, that must be executed once, if you are upgrading from 0.4.2.1:

grep -q '/wdtvext/plugins/HidePandora.plugin.js' /conf/wdtvext-plugins \
|| echo /wdtvext/plugins/HidePandora.plugin.js >> /conf/wdtvext-plugins

Then to hide/disable Pandora:

config_tool -c PANDORA=OFF

Hiding Pandora requires a reboot after PANDORA=OFF has been set. A thread detailing this new feature can be found here.

One more good part, that is starting to finally come together. While 0.4.2.1 had the capability to download all the UMSP plugins from the subversion server, the ability to enable them was lacking, this has now been sorted. Currently only one plugin has this capability, but the firmware now has all it needs so the other plugins will offer this functionality soon. Plugin enabling/disabling/settings are handled through the WebEnd UMSP button.

Oh yes, and I jumped into my time machine and went back to 1998 to generate a new SSL certificate for the subversion server. This means that any of you who could not use the WDTVExt Plugins menu to download or update plugins, or that couldn’t get the UMSP plugins, can now do both.

One last bit…I have included a census script, which contacts the wdlxtv update server to register your device–which helps give me a better idea of how many WDLXTV users there are out there. This is disabled by default and must be manually enabled. The census is completely optional and is up to you whether or not to enable it and let your device be known. If you’d like to enable the WDLXTV_CENSUS, then execute the following option from telnet/ssh/S00custom-options:

config_tool -c WDLXTV_CENSUS=ON

It would be nice if you’d enable it to help show just how popular WDLXTV is.

Now a couple points about the Integrated OSD releases I mentioned in the 0.4.2.1 writeup.

only onetheme is included in each firmware due to size constraints

I am waiting to make sure 0.4.2.2 is reported more stable than 0.4.2.1 was before I publish the integrated releases.

There were just a bit too many bugs in 0.4.2.1 to warrant extra releases based off of it. If 0.4.2.2 reports are all (mostly) good, then the integrated releases will show up soon.

If 0.4.2.2 looks stable enough work will immediately start/continue on WDLXTV-LIVE+ too

If you haven’t already read the full writeup for 0.4.2.1, I suggest you do so: WDLXTV-LIVE-0.4.2.1 writeup.

Remember to make threads for any&all bugs you find at forum.wdlxtv.com. We are on the road to perfection. Cheers! –b-rad

WDLXTV-Live-Minimal has been temporarily discontinued. WDLXTV-Live full comes with rtorrent & NZBGet disabled by default, so it is just as thin and fast as minimal was.
Is that enough for one update? :-p Read further for detailed analysis of whats been changed.

Theres been over 400 revisions made to the firmware since 0.4.2.0, and the reason for the long delay is every time we would get close to a release another major feature would get itself worked in that had to be tuned & refined…and this kept happening until I finally put a stop to the madness to produce the masterpiece that is 0.4.2.1. Hundreds, upon many hundreds of hours have gone into this release. Now as much as possible was done to find and fix any bugs, thanks to some of my beta testing crew, but there is no doubt bugs that none of us has found. Be sure to report them to forum.wdlxtv.com

Ok first off, the internal webserver has been changed from lighttpd to Apache–and the webserver has been locked down with domain wide authentication. This gives us a lot more freedom to do things like streaming various sources and youtubeHD without much workarounds, plus it means all of the memory limitations and bugs of lighttpd won’t affect us anymore. The webend has had a lot of work done to it as well. System daemons can now be started/stopped from the webend, which means you don’t have to delve into S00custom-options to enable rtorrent, nzbget, etc. Theres also a snazzy bug report and the information in ‘system tools’ has been refined to make it all a bit more n00b friendly.

Yes, I said rtorrent. Deluge has been removed from the firmware, along with python, as it was a complete hassle to upgrade and took up far too much space for what it offered. Included with rtorrent is the rutorrent webui and a various plugins for it, like unpack & rss. To enable rtorrent, first go to the webend and click on the rtorrent link in the ‘system daemons’ panel and start it. Next reboot/power cycle your wdtvl. Once you’ve rebooted it you will see an rtorrent button in the webend, you must configure rtorrent before you can use it. This entails clicking on the config link and setting a download location. The best way to select a drive to use for downloads is to create a file called .mnt in its root, this will force the drive mounted at boot to ensure it exists when rtorrent is started. A link to the mount table is provided on the config page so you can see values to enter for the rtorrent download location.

One of the nicer bits that is included now is WDTVExt, by the great pibos (bogdan petriou). This software, produced for wdlxtv, allows dynamic OSD customization. What does this mean? Well for one that extended scan time for moviesheets that existed in 0.4.2.0 has been done away with, thanks to recliq‘s moviesheet plugin. There is also now a WDTVExt plugin manager, courtesy of recliq, which allows you to download, enable, disable, and update plugins directly from the subversion repo–so you’re always up to date. There are plugins that allow a variety of extra functionality, like marking media that has been watched / extended chapter navigation / weather / etc. The plugin manager gives you an easy way to use WDTVExt plugins without being an expert.

In addition to WDTVExt plugins coming from the SVN, all UMSP plugins are now downloaded from the subversion repo every boot now too! They all come disabled, but if you navigate to the webend and click on the config link of the UMSP button you can enable/disable/configure all of them individually. Note: no plugins currently have a config page, this bit is being worked on and will come soon. Until then you can enable SVN plugins by making entries in /conf/umsp.php as detailed in the specific plugins faq.

A new codec has made it in too, WMAPro audio support. This contribution is from the asm hacker thespecialist, who is a welcome addition to the dev team. I’m sure a lot of people will be happy to be able to play HD videos containing the codec. thespecialist was also able to debug and solve the issue of missing servers in the ‘network shares’ area, and this fix has been included for you enjoyment.

But, possibly the nicest feature to grace the firmware now is psychodad‘s auto framerate/resolution capability. Yes, this means that now (when you enable it) the framerate will change to the resolution of the video you are watching!!! Upon video completion the resolution/framerate will switch back to whatever you had selected in the OSD. Another piece of psychodad‘s contribution is HDMI resolution enforcement. This feature is for those of you out there who’s display has a bunk EDID and therefore they’ve been stuck with 480P, instead of 720P or 1080P, or for those tv’s (like mine) who contain hidden resolutions not in the EDID. Both of these settings must be enabled manually, and only apply to HDMI connections. To enable this great feature telnet in and execute
config_tool -c AUTORES=ON
, or uncomment the appropriate line from S00custom-options. To enable forced HDMI resolutions:
config_tool -c FORCEHDMI=ON

To partner with psychodad’s auto framerate patch, I have developed an overscan-zoom out correction setting. This allows you to set a custom zoom to happen when videos are played. This means that you can set display to automagically zoom out to 90%, or further if you choose, when a video starts. To enable AutoZoom telnet in and execute
config_tool -c DEFAULT_ZOOM=1
(for 90% zoom), or uncomment the appropriate line from S00custom-options.

One other interesting bit, is new localizations have been added and others have been updated and/or corrected. The new localizations include: catalan by jamiroo, dutch by ReMARKable, hungarian by bagira, and greek by staduk. Refer to S00custom-options to find out how to enable these localizations.

This will also be the first major release to have multiple OSD-integrated firmware to choose from. For now the choices are julioJS and PsychoTHC’s great osd mods, with possibly more to come. I will be adding them soon. I *think* thats all the major stuff, besides that there are an insane amount of tweaks, bug patches, enhancements, additional software, and script rewrites. Pretty much nothing in the firmware was left untouched. Is this enough for you? This release is a masterpiece, imho

I’ve gotta take some down time now, I’ve worked solid the last 4 days to get this release ready and as polished as possible and ready for consumption. I hope you enjoy it!

Plus the size difference now is negligible.

Open it in a text editor and peruse your options. If you need help there is a forum link at the bottom of the page. If you are a power user then you’ll be able to harness your Linux skills and fly off into the world of homebrew, wondering why you delayed any longer than you did.

I am putting out an official release, after much fiddling and patching. Its fairly well tested and everything is working fine for me, YMMV like usual. Its based off the latest official 1.02.21 firmware and is quite good IMHO.

This firmware is being released along with the launch of the WDLXTV.com community. WDLXTV.com contains a homebrew forum, direct download servers, main release page, and subversion repo for development. Yes, wdlxtv is growing up.

The forum is organized like such:

WD TV HD Gen 1 homebrew forums

WDTV Gen 2 homebrew forums

WDTV Live homebrew forums

or Full View

I’d like all of you to go there and sign up, then join the forums and get things going

Now on to what you really want

Hello everyone. I’d just like to announce that after weeks of successful testing with the help of my beta testing crew, movie sheets are ready to go for WDLXTV-Live!!! I have activated the auto-update feature, that is one of my many unnanounced/hidden/forgotten about features, and pulled the moviesheet update directly into your firmware.

Yes, this means that you now have moviesheet capability built in to your WDTV Live. You have access to the same three views from my previous video: full screen ‘std’ mode, ‘sheet’ mode, and ‘wall’ mode.
No really, I did update your firmware live–without any intervention from you and you now have moviesheet capability. Don’t believe me?

More updates to come soon.

I keep forgetting to ‘launch’ it, but wdlxtv.com exists and will eventually be the new home for all wdlxtv releases.
I spend a tremendous amount of time hacking the WD TV firmware[s], and producing continuous software updates and enhancements. If you appreciate my efforts please donate a little something using the link below : ) Anything makes my day. Thanks & enjoy.

Open it in a text editor and peruse your options. If you need help there is a forum link at the bottom of the page. If you are a power user then you’ll be able to harness your Linux skills and fly off into the world of homebrew, wondering why you delayed any longer than you did.

I’ve finally fixed the NTFS issues that people had been having. NTFS is now confirmed working. Theres a few other good additions as well, like being able to mount a remote FTP as a local directory The ntfs-3g driver is included, by popular demand, for power users to test with NTFS drives to determine if its better at handling high speed writes than the stock driver. I won’t provide any information on using it and if you want to try you are on your own. I don’t recommend testing with ntfs-3g unless you know what you’re doing and are prepared for possible unforeseen consequences–which there might not be any, but you are forewarned.

0.3.4.1
* ntfs-3g-2009.4.4-1 included (power users test at own risk)

0.3.4
* using Paragon NTFS driver, NTFS devices *should* now mount correctly (finally)
* curlftpfs-0.9.2-1 included
* openssl-0.9.8k-7 included
* fixed nzbget webui images not showing up
* Deluge state directory enabled (requires power cycle after changing torrent watch dir)
* fixed timezone setting command in S00custom-options & add export to /etc/profile

In this release I’ve included some missing files, trimmed up a bit of space, and most importantly patched the bug that was causing a lot of you trouble getting bittorrent & NZB functionality working. Enjoy

A fairly major bug was pointed out by Marakoss, I have patched the firmware to fix it and add one slight enhancement for windows folk. You are highly recommended to upgrade as 0.3.3 is a bit broken

0.3.3.1
* fixed hotplug script for proper app/device mounting
* changed smb.conf resolve order to: lmhosts host wins bcast

0.3.3
* fixed nzbgetweb default upload dir to match default nzbget watch dir
* fixed online.delayer to accomodate space at end of nameserver line
* rezmus's audio/video info & youtube header dmaosd patches
* widened generic thumbs selected title
* libfuse2-2.8.1-1.1 included
* strace-4.5.19-1 included
* sshfs now works [maybe ]
* gettext-0.17-8 included for custom translations
* more libs are md5'd / dupe files symlinked for space
* HFS devices are now fsck'd before mounting to fix r/o issue
* experimental ext4 support (mounted as ext3)
* possible NTFS fix for app.bins
* lighttpd server.upload-dirs now writeable

Custom Translation Instructions:

Is your native language not included in the options? Would you like it to be? Well as long as your language can be represented in UTF-8 then I have provided a method to supply up to four custom languages, which will replace the asian translations. To accomplish:

Download my skeleton translation file here.

Open it in a text editor and fill in the sections with your translation of each phrase, here is the spanish translation file for an example.

When complete save it as custom-language-01.po (or custom-language-02.po, custom-language-03.po, custom-language-04.po).

Place the custom-language file at the root of a device and power cycle your WDTV Live.

The translation file will then be overlaid over an asian font, until the next time you power cycle your WDTV Live.

Select an asian language in the Options and if successful you'll have your native tongue displayed.

I have been working extremely hard the past couple weeks. The fruits of my labours have been plentiful too. I’ve stabilized the internals and fleshed out the system to make it more complete & correct…which probably means nothing to 99% of you, but still it needed to be done. After that I went around and started beefing up the firmware with everything I can think of that I might want or which might be useful to have. Well that turned out to be an epic journey down the binary rabbit h01e…After much struggle and a few bottles of potion I came out on top and all the cards fell into place:)

So now…

Ever want to run bittorrent on your WD TV Live and manage it through an easy web interface? Check.

Ever desire NZB (newsgroup/usenet) downloading & postprocessing, with a nice web interface? Check

Ever Desire a web configuration menu so you don’t have to go to the console ever again to change all the mysterious hidden settings I have peppered everywhere? Almost check, webserver is there and config is under works.

Now I know I say this with every version I produce, but please–please–if you enjoy my produce then consider donating as much (or little) as you see fit. I put in around 200hrs of dev time into this release, and I think it shows.

The Changelog is huge, I’ve gone ahead and bolded all the parts you should smile about

Consider this my early Crimbo present to everyone

GENERAL DISCLAIMER

NOTE: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MESSING UP YOUR WDTV.
YOU ARE FLASHING A REMIX OF THE OFFICIAL FIRMWARE THAT
ADDS A LOT OF EXTRA FUNCTIONALITY — IT SHOULD NOT GO WRONG,
BUT IF IT DOES I DON’T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT.
[well I really do, I'm just not responsible ; )]

Now you might be saying GIMME THE DAMN FIRMWARE ALREADY
So OK, here it is:
// ]]>

NOTE: You must have already upgraded to official 1.01.11 or installed WDLXTV-LIVE-0.2.0 so you flash the firmware upgrade. You are advised to upgrade to official 1.01.11 firmware BEFORE upgrading to WDLXTV-LIVE-0.3.0. If you have already upgraded previously you’re fine.
NOTE: There are some bugs that I missed in 0.3.1. I am currently out of town and will fix them and enable full functionality when I have a chance.
Make sure the only two wdtvlive files on the device you’ll be upgrading with are
wdtvlive.bin
and
wdtvlive.ver
before installing WDLXTV-LIVE.
