WDLXTV App pack: UPnP-djmount.app.bin-0.2.2 *updated*

Here is the first app.bin pack for use in my WDLXTV custom WDTV firmware. The following pack contains the necessary binary to automagically mount any advertising UPnP shares.

WDLXTV – enhanced WDTV firmware 0.1

WDLXTV is a souped up unofficial firmware for the Western Digital WDTV. It is based off of the 1.01.02 firmware, but with many extra features. Similar to my dvdmod firmware, this is a permanent flash, just like an official upgrade. This firmware is an option for those whos hardware is stable with Zoranders ext3-boot, or those who don’t do much firmware programming to take advantage of ext3-boot. Once again, ext3-boot is for (sorta) pro’s and testers whereas WDLXTV is for everyday use.

Features included in WDLXTV:

  • external dvd drive capability with cd-manager-0.7
  • ext2 & ext3 filesystem support
  • ext2 & ext3 hotplugging
  • mounting of WDTV Optware package (if available) at boot
  • mounting of app bin packs (if available) at boot
  • mounting of OSD overlay (if available) at boot
  • limited USB Ethernet support (if your ethernet adapter works in ext3-boot it should work here)
  • IP via DHCP (by default, configurable)
  • Telnet server
  • pure-ftp server
  • configurable to automount NFS shares

Much thanks to Zorander whose great efforts into ext3-boot have helped immensely.

WDTV Optware tips #2 – Rapidshare downloading with SlimRat

Today I’ll walk through getting perl & SlimRat installed on your WDTV. SlimRat is a command line and GUI utility for downloading files from Rapidshare on Linux.

In order to take advantage of this tutorial you must either be running WDLXTV or Zoranders ext3-boot. You must also have my Optware for WDTV package installed, that stuff is covered elsewhere. I’ll be including every necessary step here, so you might be able to skip around if you already have some of this done.

Optware for WDTV 0.2

I have updated my Optware for WDTV opt.bin image, but not much has changed so no need to get super excited. This time around I used ipkg to install the prerequisite packages. Two new packages have been added to the prerequisite list now too: readline & uClibc-opt. Some applications will appreciate having uClibc around now, aka they’ll run correctly. Thanks to Brian Zhou @ nslu2-linux.orgfor assembling the few libs needed to get that in order!

You don’t need to download this if you already have optware running, just execute:

WDTV Optware tips #1 – resizing opt.bin *updated*

Back in my post about Optware for the WDTV, I mentioned how I had limited opt.bin to 128MB and made a comment hinting about being able to resize it if you need. Well I was called out [sasa ; )] so heres the easy steps to resize your opt.bin to whatever you’d like. 128MB really isn’t that much after all.

Note: this will require either access to a Linux computer, cygwin shell with ext2fs tools, or if you have time and patience it can be executed straight on the WDTV using Zoranders ext3-boot. It will take a long time on the WDTV though.

WDTV firmware dvd-rom+ enabled 0.3

So it struck me today that the general populus might appreciate the cd-manager program I created for Zoranders ext3-boot. I have therefore remixed both official firmware releases and added cdrom support via cd-manager. Yes, this means you can boot with a usb dvd drive connected and play from it on your WDTV now. The only limitation is that since dvd drives are officially unsupported you must have a supported (aka FAT32, NTFS, HFS,…) drive/flashdisk inserted. If there is no supported drive in the WDTV reports ‘no storage present’ and you will be unable to navigate to the browser. This firmware is flashed to your WDTV like the updates that have come from Western Digital, unlike the custom ext3-boot firmware that is available from WDTV HD player unofficial firmware wiki. Whereas ext3-boot is for pros (sorta) this ones for joes.

Optware for WDTV

WDTV optware v0.2

Provided an optware feed by the awesome people at nslu2-linux.org, I ported optware to provide the ipkg package manager system for us to use on the wdtv. This gives instant access to 1138 packages and turns the wdtv into a fully loaded machine. Most importantly it gives us instant access to extra tools to do even more to the little thing now.

porting Optware to the wdtv

After being pointed to a feed for the wdtv at nslu2-linux.org by an avsforums member I set out to fully porting it to the wdtv. Didn’t require much on my part except assembling a few key prerequisite packages and patching several files in ipkg.
